What Causes Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knee and affects nearly 1 in 4 adults over the age of 55, with women being more commonly affected than men.

What are the causes of Lower Back Pain?

Osteoarthritis can develop for several reasons, often involving a combination of wear-and-tear and other contributing factors. These include:

  • Age: The risk increases significantly as you get older.

  • Joint overuse or injury: Previous injuries or repeated stress on a joint may accelerate cartilage breakdown.

  • Obesity: Extra body weight places additional pressure on weight-bearing joints like hips and knees.

  • Genetics: A family history of OA can increase your likelihood of developing it.

  • Joint misalignment: Poor posture, leg length differences, or abnormal gait patterns may contribute.

  • Other conditions: Inflammatory joint conditions (like rheumatoid arthritis) can increase OA risk.
