What Causes Sciatica
Sciatica affects up to 40% of people at some point in their lives and is most commonly caused by a herniated disc pressing on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg.

What are the causes of Sciatica ?
Sciatica is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, but various factors can contribute to or trigger the condition.
Main Causes:
-
Herniated Disc: When the soft material inside a spinal disc bulges out and presses on the sciatic nerve.
-
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the nerves.
-
Degenerative Disc Disease: Wear and tear of the discs between your vertebrae, leading to nerve compression.
-
Spondylolisthesis: A condition where one vertebra slips over another, potentially pinching the nerve.
-
Muscle Imbalances or Tension: Tight muscles, particularly in the lower back, hips, or legs, may irritate the sciatic nerve.

Contributing Factors:
-
Age: Sciatica is more common as we age due to natural wear and tear on the spine.
-
Obesity: Extra weight can strain the spine and increase the risk of herniated discs and nerve compression.
-
Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can contribute to muscle weakness and poor spinal alignment.
-
Occupation: Jobs that require heavy lifting, twisting, or prolonged sitting can increase risk.
-
Previous Injuries: Previous back injuries or trauma may predispose you to sciatica.
