Sciatica

Learn about common causes, symptoms, and treatments for Sciatica. Find relief with simple tips and medical insights.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back, through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. Sciatica typically affects only one side of the body. The pain is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis in the lower back.

Symptoms:

  • Sharp or shooting pain in the lower back or buttocks

  • Pain that radiates down one leg, sometimes to the foot

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot

  • Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or sneezing

  • Difficulty standing or walking for long periods
